What Comes After Site Prep?

Remember the children’s song head and shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes? Well your feet and toes support the knees, which support the legs, which supports the torso which… The list could go on and on. The point of the matter is, just like the make up of your body, a house needs a foundation to hold it’s weight and a flat level base of which to stand.

Here’s a little information on the most important building block of your home or business.

Depending on when and where your house was built, the foundation might be made of stone, brick, lumber or concrete. The majority of houses have a raised perimeter foundation that supports floors and weight bearing walls.

Some houses are built on flat concrete slabs that make up both the base structure and the bottom floor of the home. Other houses, particularly smaller, older homes are built upon a series of concrete piers. The bottom portion of a foundation is called a house footing or footer.

This concrete footing is usually wider than the foundation wall and is located approximately 12 inches below the average depth at which soil freezes. The footing design is created to distribute the house’s weight to prevent settling or movement.

There are three different types of conventional concrete foundations: poured concrete, concrete block, and post-and-pier. The size and acceptable types of foundations regulated by state building codes. The professionals in Spokane’s footings and foundation businesses know the exact depths and measurements but for more information yourself, visit the Washington State Building Code Council. And also information regarding building permits for the City of Spokane.

So whether you’re building a new home or need foundation repair visit a professional. The foundation and footing on your home and building is far too important to handle incorrectly or ignore when there are problems. After all, you’d visit the doctor if you neck was having trouble holding up your head straight.
